What Is An Affiliate Program?:
An affiliate program is one where
you act as an independent agent selling another companies products or
services on a commission basis. Normally the product or service is supplied
directly to the end user by the company concerned, relieving you of
the hassle of holding stock, or physically dealing with the product
yourself.
In many cases you will also be able to introduce
other members to the program and earn a commission on their sales as well.
With referral programs there
are 'Single Level' programs where you earn commission only on members
that you have directly introduced, and 'Multi Level' where you earn commission
on all members product sales in the group below, normally down to a set
level below your position.

How Much Can I Earn From An Affiliate Program?:
There is no limit on your earnings, it really depends
on the effort that you are prepared to put into making a program work.
If you want to use a program to earn just enough to allow you to take
your family out for a really nice meal every week, that's up to you!
If you want to earn enough to give up the day job and live the lifestyle
that you can only dream about at the moment, that's also up to you!
Just don't expect it to happen overnight, this is the real world that
we're talking about.
Any business that is going to change your lifestyle in any significant
manner will take time to establish, that timescale is completely dependant
on how much effort you are prepared to put towards achieving it.
I would suggest that if you are prepared to invest between 10 and 20
hours of your time a week you could be earning sufficient income to consider
whether you still need the day job within a two to three year period!
Two to three years may sound like a long time but we
are talking about financial security here! Will your present job allow
you to make that decision in the next couple of years?
Also, remember that your income will grow as you start
to work towards your goals and will allow you to start looking at those
extras that you can't afford at the moment, the nice holiday, a new car,
maybe you will look to the future and re-invest your new income into
your business so that you really fastrack your progress! It really is
worth doing, believe me...

And before you ask where you are going to find the time to do this....
How many hours a week do you spend in front of the TV?
How many hours could you put in if you got up an hour earlier each day,
or went to bed an hour later?
Remember, the Internet is open for business 24 hours a day!
When I started developing my Internet business I had
a full time business to run, and was working 3 nights a week in a
second job, a total of anywhere between 70 and 90 hours a week. Then
I had to find time to learn how to run a successful Internet business.
That's a real
good reason for wanting to change!

What Are The Pitfalls To
Avoid?
The pitfalls are many and various,
but are really quite easy to understand:
There must be a product or service to sell:
This sounds quite obvious, but it is sometimes
hard to decide what you are actually selling!
The range of legitimate products is huge; everything from health products,
electronic books (ebooks), software,
etc.
Always look carefully for a real product or service, if in doubt leave
the program alone, it will possibly be a scam!
It also helps if the product or service that you are going to promote is
one that you either use, or have some knowledge of. It is always easier
to sell something that you believe in.
When I first started my online business I would promote anything if I thought
that I could make money from it... that was a terrible mistake, and it
would be a terrible mistake if you did that same thing.
Carefully research anything that you are going to promote, found out its
strength and weaknesses, work out whether you would use the product or
service yourself, think about whether you would be proud of the product
if someone asked you to justify your reasons for promotion.
If the only reason that you can think of is that it will make you money
then possibly you shouldn't be promoting it.
The program must be sustainable:
The commission structure must be realistic and
sustainable.
If the commission is the standard 'pay per sale' make sure that
you know when you are going to be paid. Many programs pay at the end
of each month via PayPal which is fine, just make sure that there isn't
an unreasonable earnings minimum to reach before payments are made.
If the program is one that generates income from sales and referrals
make sure the payouts don't rely on you filling a matrix completely before
getting paid. These types of programs rarely work for long and the dropout
rate can be staggering. Sure it might last for a few months, but many
of these companies rely on the fact that only a very few people will
ever introduce enough new members to achieve any form of decent commission.
Check that any two tier program pays you for all your efforts, however
small, and that the members below you also earn what they have worked
for.
